The Russell Tribunal on Palestine was launched in 2009 following the massacre of more than 1,400 Gazans perpetrated by Israel, and has since worked to bring together legal experts, scholars, activists, and other people of note, to help shed light on the reality of Israel’s occupation of Palestine. RToP also shines a light on the active role that third parties—foreign governments and corporations—play in perpetuating human rights violations in Israel-Palestine.
The final hearings took place in New York City on October 6–7, 2012.
Here are capsule bios of some of the Judges:
Alice Walker the great African-American writer and poet.
John Dugard, Professor of international Law Former Special rapporteur for both UN Commission on Human Rights and International Law Commission
Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Nobel Peace laureate 1976, Northern Ireland
Stephane Hessel, Ambassadeur de France and former French resistant
Roger Waters, musician, Pink Floyd.
To sum up, the above and indeed the whole jury were all distinguished citizens of their own countries, passionate advocates of social justice and brave global citizens attempting to unblock the massive propaganda of the Israeli government, the powerful US complicity in this international crime. As well it confronts the lassitude of too many people who for one reason or another are too lazy to break the “received consensus” which is overlaid with massive propaganda or they just are not brave enough to challenge the quite considerable power of the Lobby. This august group did indeed represent a “People’s Court.”
Members of the International Support Committee of the RToP include Nobel Prize laureates, a former United Nations Secretary-General, two former heads of state, other persons who held high political office and many representatives of civil society, writers, journalists, poets, actors, film directors, scientists, professors, lawyers and judges.
Previous sessions were held in Barcelona (EU complicity), London (corporate complicity) and Cape Town (the crime of apartheid).
The RToP proceedings thus have comprised a number of sessions which have dealt with different aspects of complicities and omissions by states, international organisations and corporations in the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel and the perpetuation of the violations of international law committed by Israel.
A message of support was received by the fearless Christian Bishop Desmond Tutu.
