Sheldon Adelson the American billionaire, casino czar and money bags to a coterie of pathetic Republicans looking for Shelly’s dough, has called a summit meeting.
The reason the Boycott,Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement is gaining traction in a world finally catching up to the longest illegal occupation of modern times, that of Israel over the Palestinian people.
High flying Jewish philanthropists are descending on Adelson’s Venetian casino this weekend to stem the tide of BDS on US campuses where young people seem to understand that democracy and occupation simply do not go together.15 universities at last count.
Here they come Hollywood entertainment tycoon Haim Saban, Israeli-born real estate developer Adam Milstein and yes our very own Canadian businesswoman Heather Reisman who along with her husband Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman fund the Heseg program in Israel which supports soldiers who do not have family in Israel and who ardently desire to join the army of occupation. She and her hubby bolted the Liberal party for the welcoming embrace of the ultimate Israel firster, PM Harper.
The meeting which was supposed to be hush hush seeped out and a parade of deniers of the obvious are answering the call Hillel, StandWithUs, the Anti-Defamation League and the Jewish Federations of North America.
Now one person they should have been invited was the Israeli journalist Gideon Levy. who proffered valuable advice to Adelson et al, Jews of the diaspora who continue to inhabit a parallel universe where Israel shines out as a model democracy.
Levy’s free advice simply put is that there are some issues which are not hasbarable( the Israeli euphemism for propaganda, spin and BS).As Levy says one of those issues is the treatment of Palestinians.
The policy of denial and disconnection from reality is rising to a dangerous level, and the illness is getting worse. When the world starts to show encouraging signs of stirring to action, Israel further entrenches itself in its imaginary reality and erects more and more separation barriers for itself. Israel seems to think that what worked well in its society and succeeded in almost totally wiping out all consciousness and awareness, will work just as well in the rest of the world.
Well it plainly isn’t and no amount of Adelson summits is going to stop the relatively benign BDS program, a time-honoured nonviolent activity whose sole purpose is to bring a country to its senses and decency.
It’s only to be expected when facing a worldwide campaign aimed at implementing justice and international law: the stage of denial, of repression and clinging to the false, nearly magical belief that if Israel will just explain its position better and invest the appropriate resources, everything will be fine. In other words, Israel continues to think that the world is dumb (and Israel is smart). That you can sell the world anything, just as you can sell anything to Israelis. That Adelson will buy the world’s sympathy the way he buys politicians in America…
In other words, its the occupation, stupid
