The torching of a Palestinian home resulting in the death of 18 month old Ali Dawabsha has opened a serious discussion in Israel. It has flushed out both genuine israelis of conscience and blatant hypocrites and massive deniers of present day reality.
Realists included the brave Israeli human rights group B’Tselem which stated, on the day of the attack July 30 ”A burned infant was only a matter of time.” The group stated the obvious : “This is due to the authorities’ policy to avoid enforcing the law on Israelis who harm Palestinians and their property. This policy creates impunity for hate crimes, and encourages assailants to continue, leading to this morning’s horrific result.
it is a well known fact that the settlers have acted with impunity, running roughshod over both Palestinians, their homes and their olive groves. This scandal has been going on for decades, routinely ignored by the central government.Prime Minister Netanyahu has a sordid history of such incitement. His constant support of settlers and far right parties and their incendiary language, his failure to punish Jewish terrorists who have torched nine Palestinian homes in the last three years is nothing short of permission-giving.
In 1994 Netanyahu became notorious in this regard. In March of that year, video clips showed Netanyahu marching in front of a black coffin bearing the words,”Rabin is murdering Zionism”. After the assassination Netanyahu was spurned by Rabin’s widow Leah.”Mr.Netanyahu incited against my husband and led the savage demonstrations against him.” Mrs.Rabin to the shock of many personally received Yasser Arafat and accepted his condolences.
Make no mistake, Israel is a deeply racist society, particularly in the illegally occupied territories, a hotbed of Jewish exceptionalism and fundamentalist messianism. It also includes many Jews of Conscience like president Reuven Rivlin.
“Flames have engulfed our country,” he said at the rally in Jerusalem’s Zion Square. “Flames of violence, flames of hatred, flames of false, distorted and twisted beliefs, Flames which permit the shedding of blood, in the name of the Torah, in the name of the law, in the name of morality, in the name of a love for the land of Israel. Citizens of Israel, a Jewish and democratic Israel, needs a wake-up call today,”
Rivlin cited the vision of the Prophets, of compassion and mercy, in his speech. He needed to because of what was inscribed on the wall of the torched Dawabsheh home was the shocking message:”Long live the Messiah King.”
This chilling statement, to anybody familiar with Zionist history, recalls the eerie prophecy of Ahad Ha’am,(Asher Ginzberg d. 1927) the noted spiritual Zionist on his visit to Palestine in 1890. When he saw the way the settlers of that period were treating the indigenous Arabs he wrote,”They treat the Arabs with hostility and cruelty, deprive them of their rights, offend them without cause and even boast of these deeds; and nobody among us opposes this despicable and dangerous inclination. If this be the ‘Messiah, I do not wish to see his coming.”
Such is the bizarre theology which is rife in the settlements in the West Bank.
