National Canadian papers failing badly

BIAS 22

As the threat of the third intifada looms ever greater, the role of the media  is crucial. Right now our national papers are failing badly.

First point, please stop referring to Palestinians as Arabs. You never refer to Libyans, Egyptians or Moroccans as “arabs.” The word “arab” is  a pejorative code word rampant in Israel. It calls to mind a “terrorist” one who is attempting to steal Israel from the Jewish people. Israel is a deeply racist state where Palestinian life as we have seen is very cheap.

Secondly, as I read Canadian papers, it seems that this sudden violence is a clash between two equal peoples. Nothing could be farther from the truth. There is absolutely no reference to the power balance between the two communities and  the context of a 48 year old occupation. Western papers have absolutely failed in dealing with the root cause of these wild stabbings.

In late July an anti-gay Orthodox Jewish extremist stabbed and injured six participants at an annual gay pride march in Jerusalem. One person died, five went to hospital. Nobody shot the Orthodox Jew. He was apprehended and will go to trial. Two Palestinian teenagers one with a screw driver and one with a potato peeler were shot dead on the spot. Palestinian life is very cheap.

Palestinians are always shot dead when this occurs though often the attacks are not lethal. Israelis never are.

A prime example is the piece the Star ran recently on the reprehensible fatal stabbing of Aharon Bennett and  his wife, who thankfully is recovering in hospital,  was typical of such coverage. The Palestinians were described as laughing. This may indeed be true but compared to the rampant racist “Death to Arabs” chants virtually everywhere in Israel it is minuscule.

I saw vey little coverage of the wanton murder of two youngsters at a peace rally in Gaza. On Saturday October 10 in a peaceful protest 11 year old Marwan Barbakh was shot dead.He was with a group throwing stones.Omar Othman,17, was shot at the same demo. Both posed no threat to a heavily guarded military site.So far last weekend 11 were shot dead and several wounded. No coverage.

Research the death of Hadil Hashalamoun, 18 years old shot dead at a Hebron checkpoint by a 20 year old conscript who has been taught to hate “arabs” all his life. Research the shocking state of Palestinians in Hebron.

What you have is an unarmed occupied and humiliated people driven mad by a colonial power, the fifth largest army in the world. Screw driver, stones against Apache helicopters, F-16’s, guided missiles into densely populated areas in Gaza. Where is the balance? The predictable result is that clueless people with no context, no history will keep saying, “Palestinians are stabbing Jews.” Would these same amnesiacs criticize Jews in the Warsaw ghetto for throwing Molotov cocktails at the Wehrmacht?  Would the Warsaw Tagenblatt read,: Wild Jews trying to kill innocent Germans? The problem is state violence, overwhelming state violence. End the occupation, end the settlements and the secondary violence will end.

I read the Israeli papers daily  and they are  much more critical than our national papers are.

The editorial department of the Fourth Estate needs to stop self-censoring and start writing the truth about the root causes of this unrest.

Every word here Ted manifests your absolute belief in the democratic rights of the Palestinians. Your loyalty to this story matters a great deal. The imbalance of the story told by our national papers attests to the politics of the day.

    Keep it coming!

Our good friend Francesco comes to this blog promoting the ethics of the WAll Street Journal.

Just a quick Google reveals how connected this paper is to the massive amount of lies being told by their other parent companies. Also how troubling these names are when you see where political parties get their funding.

And worse still- check out the strong association to the Anerican War Industry! Remember the Berrigans sneaking in to the manufacturers of the nuclear missile plant to be arrested for smearing blood and smashing the cones with hammers? They’re all here!!

Who owns CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, Wall Street Journal etc…?
and most other major purveyors of news that we digest here in the USA?

I am speaking of the actual people, the majority stock holders, the ones who have the power to shape an agenda or political leaning of a particular news source.

When you look at who the owners are, would you then say that the most such news organizations lean most towards being liberal or conservative….and what does this tell you about the news that we get?

So why quote any newspaper then? They’ve all been purchased, according to this reasoning.

And if media is so well funded by conservatives, why is the media so dominated by left wing journalists? Most journalists are left wing.

It’s so hard for me to comment since many of the entries in this blog do not have any concrete references for me to latch onto.

The predictable result is that clueless people with no context, no history will keep saying, “Palestinians are stabbing Jews.”

This really is happening and video surveillance proves it. Francesco cited MEMRI and it is a source of such videos. That is the benefit of video – unbiased, visual evidence.

Would these same amnesiacs criticize Jews in the Warsaw ghetto for throwing Molotov cocktails at the Wehrmacht?

I do not think so since the occupied Jews in the Warsaw ghetto were attacking guilty German soldiers who were about to transport them to the death camps. There was an immediate threat. I am unaware of any Jewish extermination camps. I am aware of the Jewish hospitals that treat several Palestinians. In fact the teenaged male who recently stabbed two Jewish people is being treated in such a hospital.

At school we teach that bias can take the form of photo, title, word choice or omission. I think the latter is most pertinent to the situation in Israel and the Middle East. Only by comparing news reports from a wide variety of sources can this form of bias be noticed.

I observe that many articles about Pope Francis in this blog suffer bias by omission, in fact several media source suffer this also. So much about him has been filtered to fit a certain narrative. I always encourage my students to go to the primary source to get the truth. Sadly many miss Francis’ message due to sluggish thinking and I think also due to misdirected emotion.
