Same old Canada and Israel

The new Liberal government has indicated a new era for Canada’s foreign policy. The recent mandate letter from Prime Minister Trudeau to the Honourable Stéphane Dion stated that :

“As Minister of Foreign Affairs, your overarching goal will be to restore constructive Canadian leadership in the world and to advance Canada’s interests. This renewed leadership will serve our security and economic interests, but it will also support the deeply held Canadian desire to make a real and valuable contribution to a more peaceful and prosperous world.”

Nice words…now look what happened! It’s as if Stephen Haper is still in office.

UN panel calls for end to Israeli occupation, Vote 170 to 6 opposed (including Canada), 4 abstained.  – World Bulletin, 24 November 2015

and this on December 23, 2015

The United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution demanding Palestinian sovereignty over natural resources under Israeli occupation.
The draft solution, “Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources,” was adopted with 164 votes in favor and five against.
Member states that voted against the measure included Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, and the United States. Ten other states abstained from the vote.

Item of interest and a request for action.

”In the Third Committee, 170 countries voted in favor of the non-binding resolution, “The right of the Palestinian people to self-determination”.
Six nations that voted against the measure include Israel, United States, Canada, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau. Four other countries abstained.”

It is shameful that Canada voted to support Israel’s continued illegal occupation of the West Bank against 170 countries supporting the motion and with 4 countries abstaining. Letters and telephone calls condemning this vote should be sent to your local Member of Parliament and to Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion and also Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Canada actually aligning itself with Micronesia,Marshall Islands and Palau—and of course the USA…wow

Please forward this email to your friends and those who support human rights for the Palestinians and urge them to make their opposition to this shameful vote known to their political representatives.

    The Ghost of Harper past!
Some things never change. The Jewish alliance with the Canadian government of the day trumps all. And Trudeau is off to visit Israel soon.
Well I just let Dion know how I feel. Hopefully others will join in the chorus.

Not such a good year for Palestine, given Canada’s continued “same old” stance. What Illustrious company we are keeping! Let us remind our government we expect support of International Humanitarian Law and universal human rights by all countries, especially our best friends.
