Israel Hayom–again

Jonathan Cook the intrepid blogger from Nazareth shone his light in his last column on the poor excuse for a newspaper Israel Hayom, a propaganda sheet for Netanyahu.

Most Israeli politicians rely on overseas Jewish funders. Netanyahu won his Likud party’s primaries in 2014 exclusively with the help of foreign donors, all but one of them American.

Personifying this unhealthy external interference in Israeli politics is Sheldon Adelson, the U.S. casino magnate who is Netanyahu’s main patron. Adelson has done much more than channel donations to Netanyahu’s campaign coffers. He created a newspaper to get Netanyahu elected and keep him in office

The free daily Israel Hayom, founded 10 years ago, is now the biggest-circulation paper in Israel and is known locally as Bibi-ton, or Bibi’s newspaper, in reference to Netanyahu’s nickname. A recent investigation by Haaretz found that Adelson had sunk an astronomic sum into Israel Hayom – some $190 million in its first seven years alone – to keep it afloat.

At the same time, Adelson has been sponsoring Republican politicians, including the new occupant of the White House, Donald Trump, to ensure he has an outsize influence in the U.S. as well. Trump’s sudden conversion to Netanyahu’s pro-settlement agenda coincided with his need for Adelson’s support in the presidential campaign.

This is all good to know Ted!
Kelly Anne Conway the good American Catholic might have an alternative fact on this insight . Meanwhile Netanyahu awaits his meeting tomorrow with the American Emporer.

This unpredictable president is capable of any kind of move on the Israeli settlement issue.
He’s so illogical and selfishly focused no one can predict his moves.

    The circus continues.

Jaime Manson of the NCR writes a great piece on the American Catholic Bishops response to Trump:
“Since Donald Trump signed executive orders to build his promised wall along the Mexican border and to ban travelers from seven primarily Muslim nations, the Catholic bishops of the United States have been enjoying some positive headlines for speaking out on behalf of immigrants, Muslims and refugees.
But before we coddle the bishops with the praise that we regularly give Pope Francis each time he speaks out for the poor and marginalized, it’s important to ask why the bishops are only finding their prophetic voices after Trump’s inauguration.

Trump has been stirring waves of anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim and racist sentiment for well over a year. Building a wall and banning Muslims were the two key rallying cries of his campaign. The bishops remained largely silent throughout election season. They seem tragically late to the party.

One could argue that the bishops did not want to get mixed up in a political campaign, lest they blur the lines between church and state. But back in late October, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops didn’t hesitate to issue a thinly veiled criticism of the Clinton campaign after emails between John Podesta and Sandy Newman were leaked (we now know) by Russian hackers.”

So, if these weak kneed Bishops have suddenly found their backbone why not do some speaking out on Israel’s building projects? Now that would really be crossing the line!
